National Board Application
For almost 10 years, Sparks Magazine, an Asian American student print publication and online platform, has been working towards providing a voice to APIA youth. We strive to provide students with an opportunity to discuss and challenge their views on race, politics, and other issues. Also, we work towards giving students career experiences in the journalism and media industry.
We are currently looking for a passionate, creative, and self-starting volunteer team that can work towards our initiative to provide APIA students with more opportunities to learn about their community and tools to build a career in media. The National Board works toward the overall vision of Sparks Magazine. Whether it be assisting a new chapter at a university or securing sponsorships to support current chapters, this group shapes the future of the organization.

National Board Open Positions
EXECUTIVE TEAM
The Executive Team is composed of the Director-Level National Board positions. The Executive Team is responsible for leading day-to-day projects and operations. They will also oversee their own respective teams to support Sparks’ long and short term strategies.
OPERATIONS DIRECTOR
The Operations Director manages the Executive Team and internal communications between directors and teams.
Position Duties

Uphold overall mission of the organization

Mangages and provide support for directors in projects and goals

Lead internal communications between directors and teams

Act as second-in-command to the Executive Director
Position Requirements:

Currently seeking or have received a bachelor’s degree

Organized and detail-oriented

Ability to oversee multiple teams
STAFF DIRECTOR
The Staff Director leads the internal leadership development of National Board. The position will oversee a team that will support the position’s goals in staff development and recruitment.
Position Duties:

Establish and maintain staff on-boarding and off-boarding processes

Manage staff relations, training, and programs

Oversee staff recruitment process
-
Provide support for directors/teams in projects and goals

Fundraising Manager
The Development team oversees all fundraising and budgeting initiatives within Sparks. You will be responsible for researching and maintaining sponsorship and grant opportunities for Sparks.
Position Duties:

Manages research for new sponsorships/grants

Conducts outreach to potential sponsors
-
Updates sponsorship packet as needed
-
Assists Development Director in drafting proposals
-
Assists with initial setup of individual donor program
Position Requirements:

Clear understanding of Sparks’s mission and goals

Excellent persuasive writing and communications skills

Strong sense of teamwork and collaboration

Previous experience with Sparks and/or fundraising/development a plus
GRAPHIC DESIGNER
Marketing focuses on the public appearance and representation of Sparks Magazine. From digital promotions to awareness campaigns, the Marketing team is constantly producing new content for both internal and external use.
Position Duties:

Communicating a consistent brand voice through design
-
Working closely with the marketing director and social media team to strategize and develop creative content solutions
-
Aiding in development of building Sparks’ visual brand]
-
Creating graphics for Sparks social media (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter)
Position Requirements:
-
Clear understanding of Sparks’s mission and goals
-
Commit 2-4 hours per week to the organization (may vary depending on time of the year)

Comfortable building relationships with companies, organizations, and individuals

Strong sense of teamwork and collaboration

A creative portfolio with graphic design projects and samples

Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator

Have their own subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud
-
Experience with After Effects or motion graphics is plus, but not required

UX/UI experience is a plus, but not required
WEB DESIGNER
Marketing focuses on the public appearance and representation of Sparks Magazine. From digital promotions to awareness campaigns, the Marketing team is constantly producing new content for both internal and external use.
Position Duties:

Working with the Lead Web Developer to maintain and manage the Sparks website

Assisting in designing wireframes, web pages and assets according to the Sparks brand guidelines

Providing Sparks creative design insight for website presence
Position Requirements:

Commit 2-4 hours per week to the organization (may vary depending on time of the year)

Comfortable building relationships with companies, organizations, and individuals

Strong sense of teamwork and collaboration

A portfolio with web design and graphic design samples

Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe XD, Zeplin, Figma, and Sketch

Working knowledge of HTML/CSS and best web design practices
